THAT Introduces Low-Cost Space-Saving Dual Balanced Input IC

Milford, MA, USA – THAT Corporation is introducing a series of new low-cost, space-saving, dual differential line receiver ICs – the THAT1290-series. These are self-contained differential amplifiers preconfigured for gains of 0, ±3, and ±6dB, intended primarily for use as dual audio balanced line receivers.

Les Tyler, THAT’s president, said “these parts offer great audio performance with good common-mode rejection, at a price that makes them an attractive, space-saving alternative to conventional op-amps. The 1290-series delivers a complete balanced input stage in a small 16-pin QSOP package, selling for only $0.99 in quantities of 1000.”

Gary Hebert, THAT’s chief technology officer noted, “these ICs live up to THAT’s usual performance standards. THD is a low 0.0006%, bandwidth extends beyond 7.6 MHz, and slew rate is a high 14V/µs. We cut our costs by eliminating laser trimming, relying on the inherent matching of our Si-Chrome integrated thin-film resistor process. Our process delivers enough native precision to compete with conventional 1% resistors.”

Hebert added “the 1290-series‘ common-mode rejection is typically 50 dB. Compare that to the 36dB worst-case CMRR you get with the usual opamp plus 1% resistors.” The 1290s are made using THAT’s proprietary dielectric isolation (DI) process in THAT’s Milpitas, CA IC fabrication facility. Mr. Tyler said that, due to the DI process’s ability to deliver discrete device performance, “these parts sound like discrete designs, with the size, reliability, and convenience of ICs.”

Samples of the THAT 1296 are available immediately in RoHS-compliant 16-pin QSOP packages. The 1290 family includes a -3dB version that is unique. This version offers the best tradeoff between noise and headroom for most pro audio applications.
